Birmingham City suffer blow as key midfielder forced to undergo surgery

Birmingham City’s David Davis will be out for sometime after undergoing surgery for an ankle injury as confirmed by the club website.

The 27-year-old midfielder signed for Birmingham in 2014 from West Midlands rivals Wolves and has been a key player for them since. Over his four years at St Andrews he has made 156 appearances for the Blues and has managed to keep his place in the first team despite all the signings the club have made in recent years. He was also named the Player of the Season for 2016/17. That means this recent news will be a huge blow.

The club revealed today that Davis fractured his ankle during a training session at the Trillion Trophy Training Centre. They went on to say that he was booked in for surgery today and will go into rehabilitation afterwards. The club did not say how long Davis expects to be out, saying that the picture will become clearer once Davis comes out of surgery. However depending on how serious the injury is, it could be a serious length of time as NHS Direct says it will be at least six weeks until the cast or boot is taken off.

Birmingham will now have to cope without Davis for a chunk of the first part of the season. Fans will get a look at their team without Davis when they face Russian side Akhmat Grozny on the 12th July as part of their tour of Austria. Their Sky Bet Championship opener will be against Middlesbrough.
