Leeds United’s keeper crisis could be nearing an end with the opportunity to sign Championship stopper

Leeds United could edge closer to confirming David Stockdale as the club’s new goalkeeper with the Yorkshire Evening Post confirming Birmingham boss Gary Monk has suggested Stockdale is not needed in future plans at St Andrews.

Birmingham City and Leeds United have been struggling to reach a deal, with a recent offer from Leeds to take Stockdale on loan for the season with the intention of signing him on a permanent deal at the duration of the 12 months being knocked back by Birmingham. However, City seem to want to get rid sooner rather than later.

Stockdale has been with The Blues for just 12 months with two more years left on his contract. Monk has mentioned one reason for Stockdale to leave the club is for financial reasons. He has returned a week later for training at Birmingham to train with the academy squad and there are rumours that he favours a move to West-Yorkshire.

The need for a goalkeeper at Elland Road has become an ever-increasing problem as Leeds United near their pre-season matches, including fixtures against Forest Green Rovers, York City as well as Las Palmas. Other viable options for Leeds Goalkeeper problem include Manchester City’s Angus Gunn and Chelsea’s Jamal Blackman (recently on loan at Sheffield United).

Signings so far this window include Lewis Baker who has recently joined from Chelsea, having finished his loan spell at Middlesbrough last season. With a few new additions to strengthen the squad, Leeds could stand a good chance in the fight for promotion and re-enter the top division for the first time since 2004.
