West Brom swoop in for rivals Aston Villa target

West Brom are keen to sign Aston Villa target and Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, according to Daily Mail.

It is believed that Sam Johnstone is being lined up by West Bromwich Albion to replace Ben Foster. But it will be a costly move as they want around £5million for Johnstone as he is in the last year of his contract and there seems to be no plans to renew it.

West Brom have had further talks with Premiership side Watford who have offered to improve their initial £1million bid for Ben Foster and his departure will pave the way for Johnstone to arrive.

His exit from Old Trafford has been opened following a deal for Stoke City’s Lee Grant, who will join as third-choice keeper behind David De Gea and Sergio Romero.

About Sam Johnstone –

A loan move to Championship side Aston Villa in January 2017 provided a great opportunity for Johnstone to show his quality.

The goalkeeper managed to make 22 appearances for Aston Villa in the back-end of the 2016/17 campaign, and he impressed enough to extend his stay at Villa Park, agreeing a season-long loan deal for 2017/18 in July 2017.

In his second season with Aston Villa, Johnstone played every Championship match bar one, and he kept 20 clean sheets with a further two in the end-of-season play-offs. The campaign would end in heartbreak though for the 22 year-old, as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the play-off final.

The ex-England Under-19 and Under-21 international was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2011, and he then proved himself at league level during a number of loan spells in the lower divisions.
