Brentford defender Andreas Bjelland has left Griffin Park after rejecting a new deal at the London club. The Danish international was a key member of the Bees back line and Dean Smith will have to work hard in order to find a replacement. Here are three defenders the former Walsall boss should look to sign this summer:
Patrick Bauer, Charlton Athletic – The German defender has already been attracting interest from clubs in the second tier this summer, with Bolton reportedly at the front of the que. The big defender has spent three years at The Valley, racking up 89 appearances in the process. His height makes him a threat from set pieces, and he’s racked up 8 goals during his time with the Addicks. After Charlton failed to win promotion last season, Bauer might be ready to make the step up next season and Brentford should be keeping tabs on him.
Nedum Onuoha, Free Agent – The former QPR captain is now without a club after the expiration of his contract at Loftus Road. He was offered a new deal by the Londoners but opted to turn it down in order to explore his options this summer. In his 6 year spell at the club, the defender made 207 appearances for the Hoops, scoring 7 goals. He’d bring leadership to the Brentford dressing room and would prove to be a solid replacement for Bjelland.
Tommy Elphick, Aston Villa – The former AFC Bournemouth man looked set to join Reading on a permanent deal this summer, but it appears that the Royals have cooled their interest in the centre back. He was told he was surplus to requirements by Steve Bruce last season and was loaned out to Reading. Elphick has experience of winning promotion from the Championship and should be considered by Dean Smith.
