Scottish Premiership club Hibernian will step up their efforts to sign wantaway Barnsley midfielder Stevie Mallan according to the Edinburgh Evening News.

The 22-year-old Glasgow-born midfielder has struggled for first team playing opportunities at Oakwell since joining the South Yorkshire club from St Mirren last summer.

Mallan made just nine appearances in all competitions for Barnsley last season and has expressed his desire to return to Scotland.

Scottish Premiership club Hibernian have been linked with a six-figure swoop for the former Scotland Under-21 international midfielder and it has now been reported that the Hibees will step up their pursuit of the player with the club set to lose out of contract midfielder Dylan McGeouch. Scotland international McGeouch could move to the English Football League in the coming days with Sunderland one of the clubs heavily linked with the player.

Barnsley midfielder Mallan started his career in the academy system at St Mirren. The youngster went on to make 112 senior appearances for The Buddies in all competitions while he scored 29 goals.

The player joined Barnsley for an undisclosed fee last summer, however, Mallan has found his time at Oakwell frustrating and has managed just handful of outings under three different managers in the form of Paul Heckingbottom, Paul Harsley and Jose Morais.
