Chairman confirms Sunderland have made approach for Peterborough United defender

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed on Twitter that Sunderland have made an approach for Jack Baldwin.

In what was seen as a surprising move, Baldwin was put on the transfer list this summer despite being the captain last season. Many said that this was down to some unusually poor performances and head coach Steve Evans wanting to bring in his own talent as the Posh hope to launch a bid for promotion this season.

Following the transfer listing, there was some reports that Sunderland wanted to sign Baldwin. Following their relegation into Sky Bet League One, new head coach Jack Ross appears to be looking at signing talent proven in the division to help them return to the Sky Bet Championship at the first time of asking and Baldwin fits that mold perfectly.

And with the Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony usually being open with any deals coming in and out of the club, one fan asked if the rumours of Sunderland making a bid for Baldwin was true. And while he did not confirm if a bid was made, he did say that there was a phone call to the club about Baldwin in the last week.

If Sunderland are happy with the valuation of Baldwin, this should be an easy deal to complete for the Wearside club. Both teams seem to want to do the deal and it will give Sunderland extra depth in defence and Peterborough a bit more money to rebuild their squad ahead of what could be a very exciting season for both sides.
