Coventry City set to sign Shrewsbury Town captain

Coventry City are set to sign Shrewsbury Town captain Abu Ogogo after the midfielder rejected a new deal at The New Meadow, according to the Shropshire Star.

The centre midfielder won the club’s Player of the Year award last season after helping the Shrews reach the Playoff Final.

He has spent three years with Salop after joining from Dagenham and Redbridge in 2015.

The 28-year-old made 124  appearances for Town in total, scoring five times.

He was made the club captain by Paul Hurst at the start of last season and established himself as a firm fan favourite during his time at the club.

Coventry wo promotion back to League One at the first time of asking last season, as they defeated Exeter City 3-1 in the Playoff Final.

Despite already having a number of midfielders, it is looking increasingly likely that Tom Bayliss will depart this summer, and Mark Robins has acted quickly to secure the services of the  former Arsenal man.

The Sky Blues will be aiming for back to back promotions next season and the signing of Ogogo will provide the youthful Coventry side with some much needed third tier experience.

Ogogo’s season was prematurely ended after he required surgery on a knee ligament injury which he sustained during training.

The sale of James Maddison to Leicester from Norwich has had a big effect on transfer proceedings at the Ricoh Arena as the Midlanders pocketed a hefty sell on fee.

Mark Robins men will want to carry on the momentum last season and the signing of Ogogo will add squad depth and provide some healthy competition among the team.
