Blackpool sign Northampton Town left-back on a season-long loan

Blackpool boss Gary Bowyer has signed Northampton Town left-back Joe Bunney on loan until the end of the season, confirmed by the club website.

Joe Bunney arrives at Bloomfield Road as a regular in Sky Bet League One for several seasons but found it difficult last season.

Bunney only managed to make 12 appearances for Northampton last season following a move for an undisclosed fee in the January transfer window from Rochdale.

In his time with Rochdale, he played just shy of 150 games for the club.

He was at Lancaster City as a youngster, Bunney began his career as a striker but has since flourished as an attacking left-back since 2016.

He becomes Blackpool’s seventh summer arrival ahead of the new season.

Gary Bowyer’s thoughts –

“Joe has good experience at this level, is great going forward and also has good delivery from set-plays. He’s shown a real desire to come and join us and we are delighted to have him. Having lost Colin Daniel this summer, Joe’s arrival gives us competition in that position.”

Joe Bunney’s thoughts –

“I’m delighted to be here and I can’t wait to get going. It’s perfect timing. The lads are back in on Wednesday so we can hit the ground running, hopefully. I’m here to create goals and see how far we can get up the table.”

Northampton boss Dean Austin said this move was in the best interests of all parties.

“Joe wasn’t playing in the side at the end of last season,” he said.

“He has been offered this opportunity to go and play at Blackpool and he has handled things the right way.

“He said to us that he would like to take this opportunity and we felt it was a good move for us both at this time.

“He moves with our thanks and best wishes for a good season with Blackpool and we will monitor his progress.”
