Leeds United third striker option mentioned by journalist

Ask any Leeds United fan and they will tell you that one, over-arching ,thing is needed at Elland Road for a successful campaign next season – a striker.

That need can be expressed no clearer than a quick comparison of last season’s campaign compared to the one previous. It the latter, Chris Wood was on fire, steamrollering his way to 27 Sky Bet Championship goals for the Whites.

In contrast, last season’s 2017/18 campaign was a goal-scoring damp squib of sorts for Leeds United fans to endure. There were poor performances aplenty as the Whites imploded spectacularly – costing two managers their jobs in Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom.

Despite scoring 11 and 10 goals each, neither Kemar Roofe nor loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga were the answer to the ‘who should replace Chris Wood question. It was obvious that the answers lay elsewhere.

The recent capture of former Argentina and Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa has fired the imagination of Leeds United fans ahead of next season, a season where the seemingly perennial wait for promotion is hopefully going to come to fruition in May 2019.

Names linked in with the striker role at Elland Road have been almost as high-key as Bielsa’s capture with soon-to-be free agent Abel Hernandez and Derby County’s Matej Vydra named as players the Whites management want to bring in.

Sun journalist Alan Nixon has tweeted the following, an indication that things are hotting up in United’s chase for Derby’s 21-goal hotshot striker:

Aside from the assertion that things are hotting up between Leeds and Derby over Vydra is Nixon’s prompting that the Whites have irons in other fires when he says “Leeds have been into another forward.

This has prompted many Leeds fans to clamour for some form of confirmation as to who it might be, especially considering the “who costs a bit less” part of Nixon’s tweet.

One fan prompted whether it was Hull City’s Abel Hernandez, who has rejected a new deal at the KCOM and is said to have been in deep discussions with the Elland Road club. However, Nixon throws another cat amongst the scattering pigeons with this retweet:

This opens up intriguing possibilities for Whites fans to ponder ahead of the imminent arrival of the mercurial Bielsa. A ‘third’ option to run alongside the interest in Vydra and Hernandez is one that will give Leeds United fans plenty to think about.

Some are hoping that this third option is a player like Jack Marriott from Peterborough whilst others are hoping it isn’t a player like Jerry Mbakogu from Carpi. Whoever it is, it’s sure to be an interesting few days ahead for expectant Leeds fans.
