Sunderland are set to sign Turkish defender

Sunderland boss Jack Ross is set to make his first signing as Turkish defender Alim Ozturk looks set to join the club, according to Chronicle Live.

The 25-year-old 6ft 3in former Hearts captain, who currently plays for Turkish side Boluspor, who is understood to have undergone a medical at the Academy of Light ahead of a move to League One side Sunderland.

Ozturk is believed to be a strong defender and possess a powerful shot, as fans at Hearts found out in their Edinburgh derby against Hibernian in 2014. Described as cultured, he is a ball-playing defender who grew up playing the Dutch way and is evident in his game.

Ozturk managed 19 appearances as Boluspor finished third in the Turkish second tier last season, and then he went on to lost out in the promotion play-offs.

He is well known to Sunderland boss Jack Ross, who was U20’s manager at Hearts when Ozturk first signed for the club.

Sunderland are currently have minimum options at centre-back with John O’Shea and Marc Wilson being released earlier in the summer.

Lamine Kone also seems certain to leave the club this summer, but they must find a buyer first.

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald made it clear earlier in the week that he expected the club’s work in the transfer market to begin in the coming days, with around five players likely to depart and a similar number of arrivals.

Ozturk is one of four deals the club was known to be working on, with other targets including two strikers and a midfielder.
