Preston North End close to signing Peterborough United left-back

Preston North End are close to signing Peterborough United left-back Andrew Hughes, according to Lancashire Evening Post.

It is believed that a fee has been agreed with League One side Peterborough for left-back Hughes and the next part of the move is for him to undergo a medical at Deepdale.

Andrew Hughes can operate in the centre of defence as well as his natural left-back position, Preston North End boss Alex Neil is known to be very keen on flexible players.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony first revealed North End’s interest in Hughes on social media on Tuesday night but said they had rejected three bids.

Peterborough chief executive Barry Fry expanded on that, saying that the 26-year-old was keen to make the step up to the Championship with Preston North End.

But, they triggered a 12-month extension to Hughes’ contract this summer, enabling Posh to get a fee for him and leaving them in a good position when negotiating .

Fry said : “His original contract runs out at the end of June, but we have taken up the option of another year.”

“We’ve spoken to his agent about a further extension, but he insists that won’t happen, “Andrew is 26. He has only played for us and Newport.”

“He fancies the challenge of the Championship and the benefits that come from that.”

Preston North End are in the market for a new left-back having sold Greg Cunningham to Premiership side Cardiff City last week for a fee in the region of £4m.

Cardiff-born Hughes started his career with Newport County before joining Peterborough in June 2016.

Last season he made 56 appearances for Posh in all competitions.
