It has become apparent in the last hour that Premier League Southampton are interested in signing Stoke City player, Geoff Cameron. This is according to a report from the Stoke Sentinal.
At the age of 32, Geoff Cameron is a very experienced player at the highest level of the English game. He’s made 168 Premier League appearances. All of which have come at Stoke City.
The former United States international is quite a versatile player too. He can play as a defensive-minded midfielder, a right-back or a centre-half. He’s also endured brief spells in left-back and right midfield in the past.
At almost 33, his Premier League years looked all but behind him. But with Gary Rowett looking to reduce the average age of his squad significantly and Mark Hughes said to be interested in signing his former player, his chances of being a Premier League footballer, once again, have been massively increased.
There is a release clause in the American’s contract which is thought to be around £5m. Stoke City are said to be holding out for no less than that amount.
Cameron is currently still out in the States and isn’t set to return until next week where he will find out whether he is to be part of Rowett’s plans for next season or not. At the minute, it doesn’t seem very likely.
Stoke City have one of the oldest squads in the League with an average age of over 28 years old. It’s no surprise Rowett is looking to bring the age of squad down. It’s obvious the reason he’s looking to bring in some much needed young talent is to fuel their promotion challenge this season. We’ll all find out in the coming days whether the Stoke City defender will remain at the club next season. Stay tuned for more on this across all of our platforms.
