Imbula, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United eyeing move for Stoke’s record signing

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United eyeing move for Stoke’s record signing

Premier League sides Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are tracking out of favour Stoke City midfielder Giannelli Imbula, according to SFR Sport.

The 25 year old joined the Potters in 2016 from Porto for a club record fee of £18.3m.

He joined during the 2016 January transfer window and made his debut for the club in a 3-0 defeat to Everton.

However, Imbula failed to nail down a starting spot under then Stoke boss Mark Hughes and the French International found himself being left out of the Potters matchday squad on a regular basis.

After a season and a half at the Bet365 Stadium, the midfielder joined French club Toulouse on a season long loan deal last summer.

Imbula played 34 times for Toulouse, where he scored one goal, and helped the club avoid relegation after they defeated AC Ajaccio in a relegation play-off.

He has now returned to the club, but looks set to depart this transfer window as Gary Rowett builds a squad capable of securing an instant return to the top flight.

It is understood that Newcastle United are Crystal Palace have interest in Imbula as the two clubs prepare for the new season in the Premier League.

It is unlikely that Stoke will make the money back that they originally spent on Imbula, as the Frenchman has made just 26 appearances for Stoke, scoring 2 goals during his time in the Potteries.

Former Derby boss Rowett has not shut the door on Imbula’s time at the Bet365 Stadium, but with interest from the Premier League, his  time at the club appears to be over.
