Burn, OPINION: Why Aston Villa should sign Wigan defender

OPINION: Why Aston Villa should sign Wigan defender

A report today in the Birmingham Mail has linked Wigan defender Dan Burn with a move to losing Playoff Finalists Dan Burn. Here is why the Villains should sign the 6ft 7in centre back.

At 26 years old now, Burn is coming in to the prime of his career and he has just won the second promotion of his career.

In 2013 Burn and Byron Webster formed a formidable partnership at Huish Park for Yeovil as he helped the Glovers gain an unlikely promotion the the Championship.

The giant defender has a wealth of Championship experience with Birmingham City, Fulham, and Wigan so he knows what it takes to win in the second tier.

His height makes him effective in both boxes and he has grabbed four goals during his 2 year spell at the DW Stadium.

Burn joined the latics from Fulham in 2016 on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract at Craven Cottage.

He made 30 appearances last season for Wigan, with injury preventing him from racking up a full quota.

He was also part of Wigan’s fantastic cup run and made a remarkable 12 clearances as the Tics shocked Manchester City in the 5th round.

With Chris Samba and John Terry already departing, the Villains will be in desperate need of defensive reinforcements this summer.

Tommy Elphick looks set to leave the club as well, with Stoke City heavily tracking James Chester as well.

Given Villa’s financial situation, Burn seems like the perfect fit for a Villa side in need of defensive cover. He wouldn’t cost too much and could provide solid cover at the heart of the back line.
