Sunderland in chase for Barnsley midfielder

Sunderland are looking to sign Barnsley’s Stevie Mallan according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

The 22-year-old midfielder signed for Barnsley last summer for an undisclosed fee from St Mirren but his first year in South Yorkshire has been an underwhelming one. He has struggled to get into the first team there and only made nine appearances for the club this season. However it may hae been for the best as it means not many could blame him for the club’s relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

And with Mallan being out of the first team picture, teams are interested in signing him. There has already been reports that Hibernian want to bring him back to Scotland but now Sunderland are interested in signing him. Their new head coach Jack Ross knows Mallan well as they worked together at St Mirren and obviously thinks he could play a big part in the Sunderland side that he is in the process of rebuilding.

However there could be some difficulties in this move. Barnsley may now be keen to keep Mallan as he could end up being a regular now that they are in League One. This report indicates that Sunderland need to raise some funds which means this would have to be a cheap buy or maybe even a loan deal. And with Hibernian also pushing to complete this deal, they may end up getting priced out as they would be nothing Barnsley would love more than a bidding war for Mallan.
