Sunderland receive £5million Middlesbrough bid for key player

Sky Sports reports that Middlesbrough have produced a bid of £5million for Sunderland midfielder Paddy McNair. The former Manchester United youngster has previously attracted the attentions of Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Tony Pulis is especially keen to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season. They lacked a goalscorer from this position, and McNair would certainly be able to offer more offensive qualities in this department. Brighton have already seen two offers turned down, the second being in the region of £3.5million, according to Sky Sports.

In addition to this, a club from London is said to have bid closer to £4million for the Northern Ireland international. Sunderland also rejected this offer.

Clearly, Sunderland wish to keep one of their best players at the club as they look to produce a promotion assault at the first time of asking in Sky Bet League One. New manager Jack Ross would ideally like to build his squad around the likes of the 23-year-old, but with the price received further increasing, the club could be tempted to cash in.

It was a tough campaign for McNair last season because of injury, combined with the fact he was part of a struggling team that changed managers on a few occasions. He has been at the Stadium of Light since joining in 2016. With Middlesbrough making the play-offs last season, Pulis wishes to add more detail to his roster to give them a bigger edge in the season ahead. Losing him to a big rival would be just as painful for Sunderland.
