Leeds United twin striker hunt – updates from journalist

Leeds United have just completed their first signing of the Bielsa era, bringing in talented youngster Joshveer Shergill from Walsall. Bigger signings lay ahead for the Whites, with many turning to Phil Hay for comments.

It has been widely reported that Leeds United are heavily involved in a hunt for one striker, Uruguayan Abel Hernandez, and have expressed some interest in another, Derby County’s Matej Vydra.

Hernandez has been a target for the Whites for a while, the Uruguayan forward turning down a new deal to stay at Hull City, instead preferring to test the waters of any clubs interested in testing the waters for his signature.

What a signing it would be for Leeds if they could manage to tie down Hernandez on a deal to Elland Road. He’s a proven hot-shot at this level, hitting 28 goals in 49 Sky Bet Championship appearances. Eight of these came in 10 appearances last season, a campaign hampered by an Achilles tendon operation that saw him miss 31 games.

However, his goal-scoring was at the fore and five in seven appearances at the end of the campaign added to a second-game hat-trick in a 4-1 win against luckless Burton Albion. Another man with goals in him is Derby’s Czech forward Matej Vydra.

20-cap, five-goal Czech international Vydra has been at Derby County since an £8.5 million move from Premier League side Watford in late-August 2016. Last season he came alive with a bang, 21 goals driving the Rams into the Championship Play-Off picture where they were defeated 2-1 over two legs by Fulham.

However, in conversations with Leeds United fans, the irrepressible Phil Hay has given an insight into this twin striker hunt that the Whites are heavily involved in.

The first response comes in response to a question by Leeds fan Super Leeds.

With this tweet, Hay not only seems to admit that new Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa prefers Derby’s Vydra, but also that he has designs on “other strikers.”

The next response is perhaps the one that will kill the building dreams of many Leeds fans, that they could be spoiled and have both in a ‘cake-and-eat-it’ double swoop.

All that Hay does here is affirm what Leeds United fans really knew deep inside – there is no way the reported £20 million war chest is going to stretch to both Hernandez and Vydra.

In fact, this £20 million war chest is something that is picked up in a further response to Leeds United fan RamblingsoftheSS.

Phil Hay is right, even though £20 million is a tidy enough amount of money, it doesn’t stretch that far when you look at what Leeds United have, like Hay rightly points out, got to patch in a disappointing squad.

However, Leeds United fans can feel confident and more than a little reassured at the fact that they have Marcelo Bielsa at the helm for next season. A season starting out under a world renowned coach gives them that right, singings will fall into place before early August that should really push the joy threshold of Whites supporters.
