Macclesfield Town close to naming new manager- Gomez in frame

Macclesfield Town are close to naming their new manager, according to the club’s official website.

The Silkmen have been in the hunt for a new manager after John Askey left them to join League One side Shrewsbury. The Vanarama National League Champions are hoping to be able to name their new man soon.

Spaniard Joaquin Gomez is the bookies odds-on favourite for the vacant position. He is currently the first-team coach of Luton Town but could be set for his first managerial role with Macclesfield.

Gomez started his coaching career at the age of 24 and was the assistant manager of Spanish fifth-tier side C.P. Parla Escuela before he moved to England to join Brighton and Hove Albion. He had a variety of roles with the Seagulls such as youth team coach, performance coach and first-team coach.

He left Brighton in 2015 to join Derby County as their head of tactical analysis. He then left the Rams after a season to become the first-team coach of Luton Town in 2016 and could now be set for his first managerial position with the Silkmen.

Other names in the frame have been Maidstone’s Jay Saunders, ex-Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis and former Notts County and Carlisle United boss Keith Curle. However, if odds are anything to go by, it now appears that Macclesfield want Joaquin Gomez to lead them into League Two next season.
