Three players Aston Villa should sell to avoid financial crisis

It is no secret that Aston Villa have hit financial trouble over the last few weeks. They are now entering their last year of parachute payments and missed a big pay day as they lost out to Fulham in the Playoff Final. Here are three players they should sell to avoid a financial crisis:

Jack Grealish – The Villa academy graduate has come through the ranks at Villa Park, but the club may now be forced to sell their main asset. The midfielder has constantly been linked with moves away from the club since the close of the season with a host of Premier League sides vying for his signature. Steve Bruce has previously said that Villa won’t accept anything less than £40m for their superstar, but they may have to lower their asking price as the window goes on. The 22 year old looks destined for the top flight and is set to depart his boyhood club this summer.

Jonathan Kodjia – Despite finding the net on 19 occasions in his debut season at Villa Park, Kodjia struggled for form and fitness last campaign. He missed a large chunk of the season through injury and only managed one goal for the Villains, despite playing 867 minutes of football. He joined the club for £11m but Villa should offload him in the summer to raise funds. At 28 years old Kodjia is still in his prime and Villa could still receive a decent fee for the Ivorian.

Tommy Elphick – The former Bournemouth defender fell out of favour with Steve Bruce last season and found himself on loan at Reading for the second half of the season. He was made club captain in his debut season, but the arrival of John Terry saw Elphick slip further down the pecking order and lose the armband. He has tasted promotion from the second tier and would be wanted by a number of Championship clubs. His time at Villa Park looks up and the Midlanders should offload Elphick this summer.
