Why Leeds fans should be so excited about Marcelo Bielsa and his tactics (VIDEO)

Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa, a match made in heaven for a variety of reasons. The Argentine signed on the dotted line late last night and was announced this morning by the club, Victor Orta working miracles along with Andrea Radrizzani and Angus Kinnear.

Bielsa is world-famous for his tactics and the one thing you always hear about him is his intensity and oh yes, that 3-3-1-3 formation. Will Leeds United use this formation? Who knows, it may not suit what he thinks is needed in the Championship but in actual fact he does things his own way and the chances are we are going to see it developed at the club. Ronaldo Vieira fits a wing-back position and Luke Ayling a centre-back in his style, the rollercoaster for Leeds fans is about to start and I for one, along with almost all I think, cannot wait to get going.

“El Loco” or the mad one as it translates into English is one of the most forward thinking coaches on the planet and you don’t need to read much to know that. The names that laud the Argentine are quite staggering, the Guardiola’s and Simone’s amongst others, coaches who are working wonders at their football clubs currently. Many have said he is a huge influence on their coaching career and that bodes well for Leeds United.

The video above dissects what Bielsa does in this formation and straight away you can put names into positions, you can also all but rule some players out, they simply won’t fit under Bielsa. One thing is for sure, some won’t cope with the intense training and expectation under Bielsa, this is the shake up of all shake ups at Leeds United and we’ve needed it for some time.

Many of the current Leeds players won’t make the cut, that’s life and it needs to happen. An easy ride has been known at Leeds, not from the stands but from hierarchy and that won’t be the case under the matriculate Argentine. Some will be shipped out but we may see some faces get a chance under him that we didn’t expect, who are they? We will have to see, he wants players in early, that we know.

As I mentioned above there are some players who seem like the perfect fit before a ball is even kicked. In the 3-3-1-3 formation full-backs are used as centre-backs and that would probably mean a more central role for Luke Ayling, he could easily do it and would give some character to the central defence. A ball-player and a good defender, the perfect role.

Adam Forshaw is another, a “midfielder patroller” in front of the defence, someone who helps get the ball wide and is used as an anchor, he’s probably Leeds’ best player along with a certain Samu Saiz and that position would be made for him. Saiz himself would fit perfectly in the number 10 role, no defensive responsibility and a player to get the attacking moves going, look no further.

Ronaldo Vieira has the same style as someone Bielsa used at right wing-back during his Chile days, Aturo Vidal. Before anyone gets upset I’m not saying he’s the same player or as good, they just have similar styles. The final one is Gjanni Alioski, a hard-worker and a good outlet on his day but doesn’t give you the attacking threat as much as you would like, arguably he’s better going the other way. A wing-back role was made for him, and with a wide attacker in front of him.

Leeds fans expected a minimum requirement of effort and desire, they can accept poor performances if the work has gone in, not consistently but the off games that players are sure to have. Bielsa is almost certainly one who will demand that from the players at the club and will want to bring in a few players who help him push this to the ones already here.

Leeds fans have a lot to be excited about. There seems to be money to spend and one of the best tacticians on the planet has arrived (or will arrive next week) at Leeds United. He has time, the fact he’s such a high-profile appointment and he’s the highest paid coach in the clubs history means he will get the time, Leeds can’t afford to make rash decisions for those reasons and Bielsa has already stated that he sees this as the English project he has always wanted, we already know he turned down other Premier League clubs in recent times.
