OPINION: Could Bielsa take Leeds United to the Premier League?

Many have tried, many have failed. The last 14 years since Leeds’ relegation of the top-flight has seen a number of different managers, it’s seen relegations, administrations and promotions. Owners have come and gone, just like managers have but it appears now that Leeds United are set for a gigantic season.

Bielsa is a huge coin toss for Leeds United – he could fit in perfectly and be a real success and take the club to the Premier League with attacking, expansive displays. Equally, he could walk out after a few days because he decides the club isn’t for him.

Bielsa’s nickname, ‘El Loco’ shows that he is certainly controversial but at the same time, he’s been heralded a genius by some of the biggest names in Football such as Batistuta, Guardiola and Pocchetino.

Bielsa’s managed national teams, top-flight teams and has managed some of the bigger names in football but the Championship could bring a rude awakening to the manager.

His 3-3-1-3 formation whilst incredibly exciting on paper could be somewhat thwarted in practice when they may face a lower-level Championship side on a cold weeknight with 10 men behind the ball. Equally, his Leeds United team could be akin to Wolves over the last season and could simply blow sides away with its quality and tactical set-up.

Bielsa brings a huge amount of uncertainty to Elland Road for the upcoming season but also he brings hope and promise for a club who have spent years out of the top-flight and are desperate to return to the top division. We’ll see what Bielsa brings, but don’t expect it to be anything ordinary.
