Derby and Nottingham Forest ‘leading the chase’ for League One ace

The Reading Chronicle reports that Derby County and Nottingham Forest are ‘leading the chase’ for Peterborough United attacking midfielder Marcus Maddison. The source also quotes that Reading realistically have ended their interest in the 24-year-old.

The player, now managed at Posh by Steve Evans, is believed to have a release clause worth £2.5million in his contract. Derby and Forest are two who are believed to be willing to meet that price, as the rivals battle it out to snap up one of the hottest properties in Sky Bet League One. Maddison’s team mate, Jack Marriott, is another attracting big interest from teams in the Sky Bet Championship.

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has been on social media recently, where he stated that it was ‘doubtful’ that Maddison would be moving to Reading this summer. They are understood to have switched their attentions to Stephen Ireland, who plays in a similar position. He was relegated with Stoke City last season.

Maddison made a big impression in non-league football during his time at Gateshead. This soon made a host of clubs within the EFL express their desire to sign the player back in 2014. Peterborough, who have a history of signing players from non-league and then selling them on for a big fee, soon won this respective battle. Since then, he has played over 150 times for the club, becoming a vitally important player and fans’ favourite. However, after missing out on promotion last season, it looks as though he wishes to test himself at a higher level, and try to compete for promotion into the Premier League.
