Leeds United keeping tabs on Brentford defender

The chief football writer at the Yorkshire Evening Post, Phil Hay, has reported that Leeds United are interested in Brentford and Republic of Ireland defender, John Egan.

John Egan started his career at Sunderland where he was sent out on loan several times to the likes of Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Bradford City. His first permanent move away from Sunderland came in 2014 as he moved to League One Gillingham.

His talent really showed at Gillingham where he made 92 appearances in a two season spell at the club. During this time he scored a quite impressive 11 goals as a centre-back. These two solid seasons earned him a move up to Championship Brentford where’s he’s continued to develop into a top Championship centre-back.

He’s about in enter his third season at the London based club and is under contract there until 2020. He’s appeared on 71 occasions for The Bees and has scored even goals. He’s a top centre-back in the Championship and is overlooked by so many people.

Leeds United have had some real defensive issues of late and last seasons stats just prove that. In 46 Championship games last season they conceded 64 goals. The worst in the top 15 teams in the Championship. Their leaky defence is a big part of what’s stopping Leeds from seriously pushing for promotion and this signing could help that issue. This potential signing along with a new striker could make Leeds United genuine promotion contenders this season.
