Sheffield Wednesday want to sign Benfica winger on loan

Sheffield Wednesday want to sign Benfica’s Joao Amaral on loan according to a report from Portuguese publication Jornal Record.

The Owls have signed a few players from Portugal in the past including Lucas Joao, Marco Matias and Vincent Sasso. But with Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal departing the club at the end of 2017, many thought that the regular links and signings from Portugal would stop. But it appears that there will still be interest in Portuguese players as they are now linked with one.

The 26-year-old winger that Wednesday want to sign is Amaral. He has played for a number of lower league sides in Portugal including the likes of Padroense, Mirandela and Pedras Rubras before earning a big move to the Primeira Liga in 2016 with Vitoria Setubal. And after impressing with them over the last two years, he recently signed with Benfica.

But even though he has now got a three-year contract with the Portuguese giants he may soon head out on loan. And Sheffield Wednesday are very interested in signing him. Because of a reduced budget due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, the Owls are looking for bargains and signing a talented winger on loan would certainly fit that. The rumours have been boosted recently by the fact that Wednesday CEO Katrien Meire was in Portugal last week, though that may be reading too much into a summer holiday. But if Amaral could get used to the pace of the Championship, he could end up being a great signing for Wednesday.
