Brentford have signed exciting Iceland Under-21 international midfielder

Brentford B have signed Iceland Under-21 international midfield player Kolbeinn Birgir Finnsson, which is confirmed by their club website.

The 18-year-old midfielder has completed a medical with the club and has signed a two-year contract with an option for an extra year.

Kolbeinn joins Brentford after his contract with Groningen came to an end. The Icelandic youth international joined the Dutch side in January 2016 from ĺþróttafélagið Fylkir.

He spent time with their Under-19 sides and played for the Under-23 team last season. He made 21 appearances for the Under-23 side, Jong Groningen, in 2017/18 in the fourth tier of Dutch football.

Kolbeinn has impressively played for Iceland at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level and made his debut for the Under-21 side in a friendly match against Republic of Ireland in March.

He has played 33 times for his country in total and scored five goals. Kolbeinn will link up with his new team mates for pre-season training later this month.

Kevin O’Connor, Brentford B Head Coach, said: “I am pleased to welcome Kolbeinn to Brentford. We feel that he will bring energy and technical quality to our team over a range of positions and with his international experience, he will enhance the quality in the B team squad as we move in to the new season. All the coaching staff are looking forward to working with him.”

Kolbeinn Birgir Finnsson isn’t the first Icelandic player to join Brentford B this summer as young goalkeeper Patrik Sigurður Gunnarsson has joined Brentford B from Icelandic side Breiðablik for an undisclosed fee.
