Premier League giants light lit for Stoke star capture

According to the Mirror’s David Maddock, Liverpool are all green light is go go go over relegated Stoke City star Xherdan Shaqiri.

26-year-old Swiss/Kosovan Shaqiri is available after Stoke’s drop to the Sky Bet Championship thanks to a relegation clause inserted into his contract, a clause with a release fee of around £12.7 million.

Shaqiri arrived at the Potters in a £15.3 million deal from Inter Milan in mid-August 2015, and has featured in 92 games for them. During his time at the club he has scored 15 goals and provided 15 assists – eight of those goals and seven of those assists coming this season as Stoke fought unsuccessfully against relegation.

The Mirror’s Maddock says that “Liverpool have expressed a firm interest” in the Swiss international as they look to bolster options for what is already a potent attacking force at Anfield already.

Maddock continues and adds that Liverpool view Shaqiri more as back-up to the Red’s potent three of Mo Salah, Robert Firmono and Sadio Mane. On this front he says that Liverpool have made “an enquiry about his [Shaqiri’s] situation” and that he “ticks a lot of boxes for the Anfield club.”

Shaqiri currently on World Cup duty with Switzerland and a good World Cup will no doubt raise his stock somewhat. Journalist Maddock does admit that Liverpool are not alone in their interest for the diminutive Swiss star.

They warn that the Merseysiders will face competition from neighbours and city rivals Everton, with Serie A giants Roma also said to be waiting in the wings after having made a rejected bid for the then Premier League star.
