Wolves lose out to Italian champions in pursuit of international defender

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to lose the battle to sign Valencia and Portugal defender Joao Cancelo, with Serie A champions Juventus closing in on a deal for the right-back.

The recently crowned Sky Bet Championship winners had been linked with a move for Cancelo for a number of weeks, with talks of a £35 million fee being offered by the Premier League new boys.

However, TalkSport reports that Cancelo favours a return to Italy, where he spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Inter Milan.

This move to Italy will see him join the country’s best club, with Juventus winning yet another Serie A title this season, as well as reaching the Champions League Quarter Finals.

Juventus had been clear favourites to sign Joao Cancelo for a long time due to the stature of the Turin club, but Wolves had been hoping for another favourite from Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes.

It wasn’t to be, and despite the Black Country club having hosted talks with representatives of Joao Cancelo, the 24-year-old has opted for a move to Juventus.

Cancelo is a defender with a wealth of experience for someone of his age, and has played consistently for both club and country over the last few years.

That being said, the right back missed out on Portugal’s final 23 man squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia, despite making the 35 man preliminary squad.

A move to Wolves could have put him more in the limelight, but a transfer to Juventus allows Cancelo to test himself in the Champions League against the very best around.
