Shawcross, Stoke City set to give iconic defender a pay cut

Stoke City set to give iconic defender a pay cut

Stoke City are set to offer Ryan Shawcross a contract that will see his wages reduced according to a report from the Daily Star.

The Potters were relegated from the Premier League this season and this usually means a complete overhaul of the squad. Even with parachute payments, the reduced amount of revenue means that bigger earners have to go simply so the club can pay the bills. With the news coming out of Aston Villa recently, that is more acute in clubs’ minds.

But Stoke do not want to lose Shawcross despite the fact he is on £50K a week wages. He is one of the most iconic Stoke players after captaining a large part of their time in the Premier League and being a key reason why they got promoted to the top tier back in 2008. He has been highly rated during his time at Stoke and even during times when some of the best in the country were interested in signing him, he has stayed loyal to the Staffordshire club.

But now that Stoke are back in the Sky Bet Championship, they need Shawcross to take a pay cut if they want to keep him. And surprisingly in an age where footballers seem to prize money over everything else, the 30-year-old defender is happy to oblige as he wants to get the Potters back into the Premier League. This will be great news for the fans who will be happy that one of their icons and favourites will not be leaving just yet.
