Middlesbrough’s pre-season schedule beginning to take shape

According to KLZ Sport, Middlesbrough are set to face Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz in a pre-season friendly in July.

The friendly between Middlesbrough and Sturm Graz will take place at the Kumberg Stadium, home to lower-league Austrian outfit SVU Kumberg on 5th July.

The game in Austria will be a tough test for Middlesbrough. Sturm Graz finished second in the Australian Bundesliga behind Red Bull Salzburg and won the OFB-Cup against the Salzburg, beating them 1-0 thanks to an extra-time goal from midfielder Stefan Hierländer.

This is followed by a trip to Victoria Park where Middlesbrough will take on Hartlepool United on July 28th.

Unusually, Middlesbrough’s last pre-season friendly is away from home. Middlesbrough normally play their last pre-season game before the new campaign at home at the Riverside. The Championship season gets underway the following weekend after their trip to Hartlepool.

Middlesbrough’s game against Hartlepool will be one of the first games in charge for ex-Boro defender Matthew Bates, who was confirmed as Pools manager back in May. Bates came through the academy at The Riverside and played over 100 games for Middlesbrough between 2004 and 2012.

This will be Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis’ first pre-season as Boro manager, and he will be hoping with a full season in charge, he can make his mark on the Championship division even more so than last year.

The Teessider’s may field some new faces by the time pre-season comes around. They have been linked to plenty of players over the last few months, and Pulis’ is ready to make the squad his own.
