European club express interest in Leeds manager target Bielsa

According to Portuguese newspaper Record, Sporting Lisbon have Marcelo Bielsa on their list of preferred managerial targets. They are searching for a new manager after Jorge Jesus departed to take on the job at Al-Hilal. Leeds are still in talks with Bielsa over replacing Paul Heckingbottom.

It is certainly a summer of excitement at Elland Road as they look to really kick on and push for promotion. Heckingbottom was given four months in the job, but no longer. Bielsa is someone they are talking to, but Leeds are not a top flight club, which does present a big challenge for them attracting a manager of such a high calibre.

Sporting have many names they are looking towards. It is believed that former Chelsea, Brazil and Portugal head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is their number one target, but it remains to be seen if he would be willing to take on the job. Former Athletic Bilbao boss Bielsa is certainly a new name that has entered their reckoning for now.

Ricardo Sa Pinto, Daniel Ramos, Peter Bosz and Matias Almeyda complete the shortlist of names that the 18-time Primeira Liga champions are looking towards. Whilst they are unable to offer UEFA Champions League football next season, their third place finish, behind major rivals Porto and Benfica, has afforded them the chance to progress into the group stages of the UEFA Europa League. This is another tick in their column. However, Bielsa may still be tempted by the challenge of getting Leeds into the promised land of the Premier League, where they haven’t played in since 2004.
