Hernandez, 21-time league champions set to beat Leeds to Hernandez signing

21-time league champions set to beat Leeds to Hernandez signing

According to Fanatik, Turkish Super Lig champions Galatasaray are confident of signing free agent striker Abel Hernandez. They have offered him a contract, and hope to conclude a double swoop alongside Joel Campbell  to kick off their summer recruitment drive.

Hernandez is available having decided against extending his contract with Sky Bet Championship side Hull City. There had been hopes from rivals Leeds United that he would remain in the division, and they offered a substantial contract to the Uruguayan forward. Although that is still a possibility, it looks as though Galatasaray are closing in on the front man.

Hernandez’s agent, Mino Raiola, supposedly had started to convince the 27-year-old that Elland Road should be his next destination for the upcoming season. News of the Turkish giants entering the picture though does change everything, especially as they can now offer UEFA Champions League football on the back of winning the domestic title for the 21st time last season.

Leeds are hoping to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as their new manager. Doing so could potentially attract a player such as Hernandez to their club, as well as others who in normal circumstances would be deemed out of their bracket realistically. Galatasaray play at the highest level however, plus European football affords Hernandez a template to prove his worth over winning back his spot in the national team. He was not selected for Uruguay ahead of the World Cup in Russia this summer. It is another case of ‘watch this space’ regarding the future of this particular striker.
