Bielsa to Leeds moves one step closer to reality

Sky Sports reports that Leeds United have entered ‘advanced talks’ with Marcelo Bielsa over becoming their new manager. The Sky Bet Championship club recently sacked Paul Heckingbottom after four months at the helm.

Bielsa has been highly-rated in the world of football for his coaching methods and tactical understanding. This news comes a few days after Bielsa’s agent confirmed to the Yorkshire Evening Post that initial discussions had begun between the concerned parties. At that stage, talks were ‘in progress’, but have seemingly taken a huge step forward.

With Sky Bet, the 62-year-old is the 1/4 favourite to replace Heckingbottom at Elland Road. That being said, there has been a flurry of activity in backing Claudio Ranieri for the job. He has been out of work since departing Ligue 1 side Nantes at the end of the previous season. Nevertheless, all roads seem to lead towards Bielsa being the shock appointment with the Whites.

Bielsa himself has been out of work since he too left Ligue 1, Lille in his case, in December. Luis Campos, the sporting director at the club, revealed to RMC at the time, that ‘we made mistakes; in handing the job to the Argentinian in the first place. Bielsa replaced many key players at the club with youngsters, a move with backfired, but Lille manged to just avoid relegation at the end of the campaign.

It promises to be an interested few days to see if Leeds can manage to get this deal across the line. Bielsa has managed the likes of Lazio, Marseille, Athletic Bilbao and the Argentina national side, during an illustrious coaching career.
