Sheffield United want to sign Chelsea goalkeeper but will struggle with wages

Sheffield United want to sign Chelsea’s Jamal Blackman but will struggle to pay his wages according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, making 31 appearances. Despite a sending off for arguing over the ball, Blackman performed well while at Bramall Lane and quickly became a fan favourite. But his loan ended at end of the season and now he is back at Chelsea where his future is uncertain. It doesn’t appear that he will break into their first team and so they might be willing to sell him this summer.

And if Blackman does become available for transfer, United will be at the front of the queue as they look to bring him back to South Yorkshire. But while that would be an ideal move for the club and player, his wages might be the issue that prevents it from happening. According to this report, Blackman is ona  staggering £22K a week. That’s already a massive number but it is even more astounding when you consider he has never made a first team appearance for Chelsea.

But with the Blades having a more modest budget than most of their Sky Bet Championship rivals, that might be a cost that they are unable to pay. So either United are going to have to move things around in their budget so they can sign Blackman or they will have to look at other targets. And so a tough decision beckons for head coach Chris Wilder as he decides which direction he wants to go.
