Middlesbrough reunion for ex-Pulis Players? Three that could add in key areas

Missing out on promotion for Middlesbrough next season isn’t really an option. We have seen what it is about to do to Aston Villa after two seasons outside of the top flight and throwing money at it, Norwich and Hull already toiling financially.

Boro were unlucky this season, Tony Pulis will have a real go next season and he may well take some of his former players to the Riverside. Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion have both been relegated and there are some players who may take the fancy of Pulis. Boro were solid last term but adding some players going forward may well be on the agenda especially as the players at the club aren’t Tony Pulis players in the main. Garry Monk spent a lot of money on players and they haven’t all worked out, leaving Pulis with an interesting situation this summer.

Jon Walters

A move to Burnley last summer quite simply hasn’t worked. He was one of the go-to players during the Pulis reign at Stoke City and the move would make complete sense. The chances of Boro holding onto Adama Traore are slim and with him not really fancying Britt Assombalonga is Walters the reliable player that Pulis can play in a few positions?

Craig Dawson

Will Dawson stay at West Bromwich Albion this summer? Boro fans probably won’t want to hear that Ben Gibson may leave but there is a strong possibility and Dawson could well fill the void that is left. Steady and a player that Pulis trusts he could add the experience needed to replace a key figure in Ben Gibson. Can operate at centre-back as well as right-back and adds height and goals from set-pieces.

James McClean

An unpopular figure for political reasons but a good footballer all the same. Pulis bought him from Wigan during his time at West Bromwich Albion for a small fee and although he wasn’t always in the side he certainly provided a good option from the bench. In the Championship he would probably command a starting position and again you go back to the Adama Traore situation. If he was to leave then he is a big void to fill and like him or hate him McClean could do some damage on the pitch at this level of football.

If Boro do sell the likes of Traore and Gibson then money won’t be in short supply. The football that Pulis may bring in probably won’t be pretty but it will, as always be very effective. The likes of Jonny Howson and Adam Clayton are still there to provide the football as is Mo Besic but bringing in some flair players isn’t really what Pulis is all about. Hard working and good delivery for big strikers down the flanks will be the requirement.
