Wolves join Spurs and Arsenal in chase for Swansea defender

Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined the race for Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson, according to odds given out by bookmakers Sky Bet.

The 2017/18 Sky Bet Championship winners have been given odds of 5/1, making them third favourites behind North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Spurs are currently favourites at 2/1, whilst the Gunners are narrowly behind as 3/1.

Wolves are looking to sign defenders with Premier League experience as they prepare for their return to the top flight, and Alfie Mawson provides the perfect balance of youth and experience.

The 24-year-old defender has been a regular in the Swansea City side ever since he joined the club in 2016, and his performances last season were one of the standouts in what was a poor overall campaign for the Welsh side, which ended with relegation to the Premier League on the final day of the season.

His performances were even recognised by England manager Gareth Southgate, who decided to call Mawson up to the England squad for friendly matches with Holland and Italy back in March, although he did not play for the senior squad.

Mawson had previously played six times for the under 21 side, scoring one goal which came in the under 21 European Championships back in 2017.

The central defender is expected to leave Swansea City this season following their relegation, and is expected to cost potential suitors somewhere in the region of £20 million.

Whilst it may seem like a lot of money for a relegated player, Mawson has a bright future ahead of him, and with plenty of time to develop, it could be a wise investment from Wolves if they were to pursue him.
