Rangers boss to fight to keep Cardiff City target at Ibrox

New Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has told in-demand attacking midfielder Josh Windass that he is key to his plans for the club next season according to the Daily Record.

The 24-year-old Hull born midfield ace joined The Gers from Lancashire club Accrington Stanley in summer 2016 and his excellent performances for his new club have not gone unnoticed.

It has been reported reported that Sky Bet Championship runners up Cardiff City are keen to sign Windass this summer while English Premier League outfit Burnley are also interested in the player. Despite the interest in Windass from south of the border, it is believed that new Rangers boss Gerrard has spoken with the player last month in a bid to persuade the midfielder to stay in Glasgow.

Since joining Rangers, Windass has made 68 appearances for the club in all competitions in which he has netted 19 goals. Both Newcastle United and Derby County are thought to have also been tracking the player’s progress in the past, although both clubs may have moved their attentions towards other targets.

Windass’ latest admirers Cardiff City are set to bolster their squad ahead of their English Premier League return, although manager Neil Warnock has warned that the club will spend wisely this summer.
