Stoke City to let experienced duo leave on free transfers

Stoke City have released Stephen Ireland and Glen Johnson, according to Sky Sports.

Both of their contracts are expiring at the end of the month and they will be allowed to leave Stoke on a free transfer. The Potters are preparing for life in the Championship next season.

Their new manager, Gary Rowett, has opted to release Ireland and Johnson and has also loaned out defender Kevin Wimmer to German Bundesliga side Hannover 96. He is now ready to bring some new players to his newly inherited squad as he prepares a squad for promotion back to the Premier League.

Stephen Ireland’s time at Stoke City has been affected by injury and he first-team chances have been limited. The former Manchester City and Aston Villa midfielder joined the Potters in 2014 but has only played five games in the past two seasons.

Glen Johnson, on the other hand, has been a first-team regular for the Potters but will now be in the hunt for a new club. The 33-year-old right-back has 54 caps for England and would be a decent signing on a free transfer for another club.

Johnson joined Stoke in 2015 on a free transfer from Liverpool. He has since played 64 games for the Potters in his three years there. Johnson has previously played for West Ham United, Chelsea, Portsmouth and Liverpool.

Stoke have also released Shola Ayoola, Lewis Banks, Ryan Hill, Eddy Lecygne and Luis Da Silva as well as Ireland and Johnson.
