Five potential candidates to replace John Askey at Macclesfield Town

Newly promoted League Two side Macclesfield Town are in the hunt for a new manager with John Askey leaving them for Shrewsbury Town. Here are five potential candidates-

Steve Watson, Gateshead- He has connections with the Silkmen having worked as their assistant manager under John Askey from July 2016 to October 2017 before leaving to take charge at Gateshead. Watson has also previously worked as a coach at Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City and is an option for Macclesfield.

Keith Curle- The 54-year-old is available after leaving League Two side Carlisle United at the end of the season. He has also managed Mansfield Town, Chester, Torquay United and Notts County in the past. Curle is an experienced boss and would be a good appointment by Macclesfield.

Paul Dickov- The former Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers boss is another option for the Silkmen. He could gain a route back into management by taking charge at the Moss Rose this summer. The fact that Macclesfield are back in the Football League make them an interesting proposition.

Mark Yates, Solihull Moors- He took charge at National League side Solihull Moors in November last year and defied the odds by keeping them up. The ex-Kidderminster, Cheltenham Town and Crawley Town manager could be rewarded for his heroics with Solihull with a return to the Football League this summer with Macclesfield.

Matt Jansen, Chorley- The former Blackburn Rovers striker has been the manager of National League North side Chorley since 2015 and is a highly-rated young manager. He is another boss who could be high on Macclesfield’s list of managerial targets.
