Sunderland linked with shock move for Premier League forward

Sunderland are targeting a summer move for Burnley forward Jonathan Walters, according to the Daily Star.

The Black Cats are looking to bolster their ranks as they look to gain an immediate promotion back to the Championship next season. Their new manager, Jack Ross, wants to sign Walters to lead their line.

Walters has found his chances at Premier League side Burnley and could leave them this summer. Sunderland’s chances of landing him may be affected by the fact they are in League One and there is expected to be interest in him from the Championship.

The 34-year-old forward has bags of experience in the Football League and would be a great acquisition by the Black Cats. He has played over 550 games in his career.

Walters started his career at Blackburn Rovers and has gone onto have spells at Bolton Wanderers, Hull City, Crewe Alexandra, Barnsley, Wrexham, Chester City, Ipswich Town and Stoke City. His career peaked at Stoke City when he was snapped up by Tony Pulis and spent seven years playing for them in the Premier League.

He would be a great signing for Sunderland and would pose a real threat in the third tier. Jack Ross is looking to make a number of signings to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad. They have also been linked with St Mirren’s Kyle Magennis and Hibernian’s John McGinn.
