Leeds United set to miss out on Premier League target – easy alternative

It was only yesterday that reports began to surface linking Leeds United with a move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but it seems that those rumours have already been put to bed less than 24 hours after they first broke.

Whilst Leeds United’s interest in the keeper is still said to be high, The Chronicle reports that Darlow himself has stated his desires to remain at the Premier League club and fight it out for his place in the Newcastle United team.

Karl Darlow lost his number one spot for the Magpies when Martin Dubravka joined the club on loan from Czech side Sparta Prague. The Slovakian goalkeeper quickly became a fan favourite, putting in a man of the match display as Newcastle beat Manchester United 1-0 at St. James’ Park, and ever since then he has been Rafa Benitez’s first choice.

And last night, the Toon Army confirmed that Dubravka had joined the club on a permanent basis, becoming their first signing of the summer.

This news was greeted with jubilation by the Newcastle fans, but it means Karl Darlow will have to face realisation that he will not be the first choice come the start of the season.

However, the 27-year-old was offered a way out, with Leeds United and Swansea City both said to be interested in signing him for a fee reported to be somewhere in the region of £2 million.

Darlow has since stated that he does not wish to drop down to the Sky Bet Championship, and instead will stay in the top flight and battle it out with Martin Dubravka for the number one shirt.

ALTERNATIVE FOR LEEDS UNITED:

Leeds United fans had been excited about rumours linking them with Karl Darlow, but it looks like it is not meant to be. But fear not Leeds supporters, there is an alternative. Yesterday, the72 reported that Angus Gunn remained the number one goalkeeping target for the Whites, and the disappointment from Darlow should be used to push through a deal for the Manchester City keeper.

Angus Gunn spent last season on loan at fellow Sky Bet Championship side Norwich City, a club where both his father and him had previously played. He impressed with his performances, and despite being highly rated by Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, he is expected to be loaned out again to gain more vital experience.

Leeds United are the perfect fit for Angus Gunn. He needs to play in front of a packed out stadium week in week out, dealing with the pressure from the home faithful to perform, and that is exactly what he will get at Elland Road.
