Leeds United to be disappointed in Premier League target hunt

According to the Chronicle Live, Leeds United are to be disappointed in their interest of Newcastle United stopper Karl Darlow.

Darlow had been linked with the Whites earlier on this week but the Chronicle Live indicate that he is ready to resume talks with Newcastle over a new contract.

The Magpies have brought in stopper Martin Dubravka on a full-time basis, activating a clause in the loan contract from Sparta Prague with a permanent fee thought to be around the £4 million mark.

27-year-old former Nottingham Forest keeper Darlow was thought to be a target for Leeds as they try to shore up a weakened position at the club that saw three keepers turn out for the first team last season.

The Felix Wiedwald experiment seems to have run its course at Elland Road, the German likely not to return to the club after a mishap-hit campaign last time out. He started as Leeds United’s #1, was replaced by #2 Andy Lonergan only to win his place back after some poor performances by Lonergan.

Wiedwald’s tenure as Leeds #1 was short-lived, the German being deposed by youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell who impressed on his run in the team that saw a sorry 2017/18 campaign end.

Leeds’ capture of Darlow would have addressed that weaker area in the Whites ‘squad, but it looks likely this won’t be the case. The Chronicle Live state that Darlow is staying at St James’ Park and “wants to fight for his place” in the Newcastle squad, essentially battling the incoming Dubravka for the #1 shirt.
