John Terry backed to join Aston Villa’s Championship rival

Sky Bet has made Derby County as 5/4 favourites to sign now free agent central defender John Terry. The Rams are now managed by Frank Lampard, who is Terry’s close friend and former Chelsea and England team mate.

As expected, Terry departed Villa Park following defeat in last weekend’s Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Final to Fulham. It was then anticipated the veteran defender would move either to Major League Soccer or the Chinese Super League. However, a move to Derby is not completely out of the question.

JT may be 37, but he believes he can still play for another season or two before stepping into management himself, like Lampard has done. The player made 36 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship last season, combing that with his undoubted experience at the highest level of the game, Lampard may look to twist his friend’s arm to try and get him on board at Pride Park.

Speaking earlier today on talkSPORT, Harry Redknapp said that Lampard luring Terry to Derby would be an excellent recruit,

“John Terry, what a signing he’d be!

“I would still take him for another year; he’s a great professional and great around the place. That would be an interesting one.”

Redknapp also highlighted the fact that Lampard is set to make Jody Morris as his new assistant manager. Morris himself is also a close friend of Terry, having played together at Chelsea. Morris has served as a coach in the youth teams at Stamford Bridge too. It is very much a case of ‘watch this space’ regarding this possibly transfer movement.
