Shrewsbury Town have missed out on promotion to the Championship after a Play-Off final defeat to Rotherham United at Wembley yesterday.
The Shrews have defied the odds this season by competing at the top end of League One despite being early pre-season favourites for relegation. They finished 3rd and were even in contention for automatic promotion.
However, they will now have to face the disappointment of what could have been after Rotherham United beat them yesterday.
Rotherham took the lead in the first-half through defender Richard Wood but the Shrews bounced back in the second-half through Alex Rodman’s strike. The game when into a tense extra-time and the Millers were able to take the lead again through a second goal from Wood.
Shrewsbury Town will also now face a battle to hold onto their manager, Paul Hurst. The highly-rated boss is a target for Championship Ipswich Town. He has done an impressive job with the Shrews despite them not gaining promotion to the second tier in the end.
Here is how Shrewsbury fans reacted to their 2-1 loss to Rotherham United at Wembley yesterday-
To see a team like that finish a season like that with nothing is heartbreaking. As cruel as anything I’ve seen in sport. #Salop

Yesterday was bad enough but waking up today to realise half the team and our manager will be moving on #notgood #salop #wegoagain

All I really wanted this season was to see @shrewsweb stay in League 1 comfortably. Little did I realise how much agony staying up comfortably could involve. Mind you – I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. #Salop

A fourth loss at Wembley and it hurts more every time but this one I feel more for the players who have made this the season we never expected, so so proud of you, no football fan could ever ask for more than what you have given us this year #lovethisteam #Salop
