Aston Villa winger unlikely to stay after play-off defeat

Aston Villa have ploughed money into the playing squad and it almost paid off. They were beaten by a better team in Fulham yesterday who have recruited so well, Villa’s attempts at ploughing money into the squad hasn’t paid off and it could signal a host of departures, big names included.

Some will be sold and others simply won’t want to stay, Robert Snodgrass may have fancied another season, but Villa’s budget probably won’t allow loan wages like that again. Villa will have to reduce their spend massively as they enter their third season at Championship level. It does seem incredible that they haven’t managed to get out of the division given the money spent but that’s the gamble you take.

One player who is now in limbo is Robert Snodgrass. The Scotland international is at another crossroads in his career and what happens next is anyone’s guess. He signed on loan from West Ham United and he was expected to help fire Steve Bruce and his side back to the Premier League but just like John Terry, Scott Hogan and others it hasn’t worked. Snodgrass will now head back to London with the chances of him returning to Villa Park extremely slim.

Villa will have made plans for next season either way, the latter was the plan b and something they would have desperately wanted to avoid. The chances of keeping players like Terry, Johnstone, Grabban and Grealish are now extremely slim. Robert Snodgrass is another and probably the key player that would help next season as Villa look to get out of the league yet again. Snodgrass is a top-end Championship player and someone who knows how to get over disappointment as well as getting out of the league.

There will be plenty of suitors for the West Ham United player who will surely be looking at staying in the Premier League next season. Some of the promoted teams and in fact bottom half sides in the division will be looking at him as a bargain if West Ham want him off the books. He left the Hammers in controversial circumstances with the owners publically criticising him and David Moyes arriving only to want him back after his move. The future is uncertain for Snodgrass, but not as much as it is for Villa.
