In football, local rivalries are often the games that fans of clubs involved look for when the fixtures calendar is released each year. It has always been the case, it will always remain so.

That’s the way that it was this season in the Sky Bet Championship between fans of Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers, both teams being amongst those fancied for promotion.

For Wolves, promotion came via the automatic route; in fact they went up as champions. Critics might argue that they ‘bought the league’, but those pleadings will fall on deaf ears. The Black Country side were head-and-shoulders above many of their league rivals with a side driven by Ruben Neves and containing talents such as the likes of Diogo Jota and Willy Boly.

For Villa, the chance of promotion came via the pathway that was the oft-called ‘lottery of the play-offs’. It was a lottery where the Midlanders bought a ticket, got entered into two draws but walked away from the last one potless. Villa’s Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley this afternoon ended with opponents Fulham walking away with a narrow 1-0 victory and promotion to the Premier League.

For Wolves fans, their near-rival’s defeat was the signal for open season and a volley of digs – digs that are going to populate Twitter all night long.

Wolves fans hand out pelters to Villa fans

And it’s not only Wolves fans getting the digs in. Look at this from Bolton’s official Twitter account. The thread came from back in late March after Villa had lost at the Trotters and put out the following, which drew a gif response from Bolton.

Villa’s Twitter account responded with the “30 points more” jibe (below), all Bolton had to do was bide their time. In the end, today was time well bided.
