West Brom target move for Austrian defender

West Bromwich Albion are interested in Red Bull Salzburg right-back Stefan Lainer, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The Baggies, who will be playing in the Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League, have appointed Darren Moore as their manager on a permanent basis. They have now reportedly made a list of targets and Lainer is high on it.

The 25-year-old has been a regular for Salzburg in both the Austrian Bundesliga and the Europa League. He has made two caps for Austria.

West Brom are keen to bolster their squad this summer as they look to get an immediate promotion back to the Premier League next season. However, they will face a battle to hold onto key players like Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson so are therefore looking at potential replacements such as Lainer.

Lainer started his career at SV Seekirchen before moving to Red Bull Salzburg as a youngster in 2006. He was loaned out to SV Grodig in 2012 and was later sold on a permanent deal to FC Liefering after never making an appearance for Salzsburg.

He worked his way back up to the top and after playing for Liefering for a season he was snapped up by SV Ried in 2015. He spent the 2015/16 season playing there before Salzburg signed him in July 2015 for just £140,000.

Lainer has turned out to be a shrewd signing by Salzburg and has played 74 times for them so far, scoring 8 goals. They could face a battle to hold onto him now with West Brom showing an interest.
