Brentford boss is odds-on favourite for the Derby County job

Brentford boss Dean Smith is the 5/6 odds-on favourite for the Derby County job on SkyBet.

The Rams are in the hunt for a new manager after Gary Rowett left them to take charge of recently relegated Stoke City. Smith currently leads the way to replace him but other names such as Paul Simpson, Martin O’Neill and Mick McCarthy are in the race as well.

Dean Smith was linked with the West Bromwich Albion job which has now been given to Darren Moore. The 47-year-old is catching the eye at Brentford as he likes his side to play attacking and attractive football.

As a player, Smith was a centre-back for the likes of Walsall, Hereford United, Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale. After retiring, he worked at Leyton Orient as a youth coach and then as their assistant manager.

Smith then moved to Walsall in 2009 as Head of Youth. He was then appointed as manager in 2011. Smith’s time with the Saddlers was successful in his four years at the club. He was then appointed manager of Championship side Brentford in November 2015.

The Bees have finished ninth on two occasions and tenth in Smith’s three seasons in charge. He has been praised for building an exciting team on a small budget.

Dean Smith would be a great appointment for Derby County as their finances may well be limited after failing to get promotion but he has got experience of doing well in the Championship with few resources.
