Derby County attacker close to joining Premier League side

Derby County winger Luke Thomas is close to joining Premier League side West Ham United for £1.2m, according to Gloucestershire Live.

The 19 year old was Derby County’s Young Player of the Year in the 2017/18 season, and it is understood that the Hammers have made an official bid for the youngster.

Thomas joined County from Cheltenham Town during the January transfer window in 2016, and the Gloucestershire club will receive a 15% sell on fee from the Rams.

The young winger made two first team appearances under Gary Rowett in home wins over Queens Park Rangers and Bolton Wanderers.

However, Rowett’s departure from Pride Park was confirmed on Tuesday evening when Stoke announced that he would take over at the Bet365 on a three year deal.

Thomas spent time away from Derby on loan at Gloucester City during the 2016/17 campaign, where he impressed in his spell with the Tigers.

West Ham recently confirmed the appointment of new manager Manuel Pellegrini on Tuesday who outlined his desire to sign young and pacy players which could be developed for the first team.

Luke Thomas is someone who fits the bill put forward by the former Manchester City boss.

He was a key component of Darren Wassell’s under 23 squad last season and put in some impressive performances which attracted the attention of teams from the top tier.

Thomas looks set to become Pellegrini’s first bit of business at the London Stadium, and will look to break in to the first team throughout the course of next season.
