Middlesbrough announce departure of two first-team players

Middlesbrough have announced that Tomas Mejias and Martin Cranie will be leaving them on free transfers on their official club website.

Both of their contracts are due to expire next month and they will become free agents as the Championship side have opted against offering them new deals.

Tomas Meijas joined Middlesbrough in 2014 from Real Madrid but has mainly been used as a back-up goalkeeper at the Riverside. The Spanish shot stopper was brought to England by former Boro boss Aitor Karanka.

He has never been used as their first choice and his departure will not come as a surprise to Boro fans. The 29-year-old was loaned to Rayo Vallecano in the 2016/17 season with his chances at Middlesbrough limited. He has not played in the league this season and will now be looking for a new club.

Martin Cranie will also be heading for the Riverside exit door. The experienced defender only joined them in January from Huddersfield Town on a short-term contract and will now become a free agent.

The 31-year-old centre-back started his career at Southampton and had loan spells at Bournemouth and Yeovil Town before signing for Portsmouth in 2007. Further loan stints followed at QPR and Charlton Athletic before he was snapped up by Coventry City in 2009.

Cranie played over 100 games for the Sky Blues but left them in 2012 to join Barnsley. He then made the swtich to Huddersfield Town after playing for the Tykes for three years. He is an experienced defender at Championship level and will be a man in demand this summer.
