Five depart Wigan Athletic following League One title triumph

Wigan Athletic have today issued their retained list, which reveals that five out of contract players will not be offered extensions and therefore are to leave. In addition to this, five more of Paul Cook’s first-team squad remain in talks over remaining at the DW Stadium for their return to the Sky Bet Championship.

Cook oversaw the perfect season for the Latics as they won the Sky Bet League One title, nudging ahead of rivals Blackburn Rovers by two-points to reach 98 points over the 46 games. Wigan will be aware of the struggles they had the last time in the Championship, so recruitment this summer is vital to their survival prospects.

Donervon Daniels and Luke James are the two highest-profile names to be leaving the football club. The defensive duo have had their injury problems, and have been freed up to search for more regular football which should aid their recovery even further. James however did start just under half of their League One matches in their title-winning campaign however. Experienced left back Andy Kellett departs, as do younger duo Luke Burke and Sam Stubbs.

Five more remain locked in talks with the football club to see if it can be agreed they will stay on. Based on their appearances last season, they are mainly squad players. Those are playmaker David Perkins, son of Aston Villa boss Steve, Alex Bruce, tricky winger Gary Roberts, goalkeeper Jamie Jones and also veteran forward Noel Hunt. It remains to be seen if they will stay or seek a new challenge elsewhere.
